Sometimes, there’s only so much blogging you can do before readers get bored or lose interest in visiting your site. Giving your blog an edge and adding some flair to it may give you the boost you need to see those visitor counts go up.

This is where widgets can be incredibly useful and so necessary. I find that, in moderation and using the right ones, widgets can be a valuable asset to you and the blogging community alike. I particularly love using the widgets that allow me to meet and stay connected with my audience. Still, there are widgets out there for every taste, and bloggers have an ample varietyof widgets to choose from in the blogosphere.

My favorite widgets are listed below, but you can look around for widgets and you’ll be sure to find so many of them out there that your head will spin.

Yes. I am a Twitter addict. I spend a great deal of time posting on Twitter, letting people know what I’m doing and giving them insight into my exciting (or not-so-exciting) life. For those of you oblivious to the marvel that is Twitter, it is essentially a way of people letting each other know what they’re up to through status updates done either online or through your mobile phone. It can get pretty addictive if you’re really into the social networking aspect of the Internet like I am. Now, Twitter has created a widget that lets Twitters share their updates with blog visitors. The site will give you a code designed for your blog or profile, be it for Facebook, Myspace, Blogger, Typepad, or any other site that you would want it for. Now, not only can I share my Twits with my Twitter friends, but I can share them with the rest of the world.

By far one of the most functional and useful widgets I’ve come across, the Bitty Browser widget will simply blog your mind. The Bitty Browser is exactly what you think it is: a mini-browser embedded into your site. It can be used as a way of sharing your favorite websites, podcasts or files to your blog readers, or it can just be incorporated into your site as a way of letting your readers search for content without ever leaving your website. It keeps your readership where they belong — on your page — and it adds an interesting, useful and, yes, I’ll say it, adorable widget to your page.

When we need storage for our large media files, many times we go to an online media storage site like Box.Net. We’re not always able to share those files with everyone we’d like to share with, however. That’s where the box.net widget comes in. This simple, slick widget allows box.net users to share their online media files with the rest of the world. It’s very simple, there’s not much to it, but if sharing media is something that you want to do with your blog, this is the best way to do it. It’s also very easy to sign up for and very easy to add to your page.

Skype is another one of those applications that has become almost indispensable, especially for business owners. Which is why this widget will be especially useful for those of you with either business blogs or personal blogs that mention business matters. The Skype widget lets people from all over the world see if you’re online and allows them to communicate with you through the Skype application. It’s incredibly user-friendly and the buttons add some flair and color to your site.

Widgets are a fun, useful way of increasing traffic to your blog website, but more importantly, they can also connect you to your readership in ways that other Internet tools can’t. Take a little while to look into widgets and see what they can do for you.

By far, one of the coolest things I’ve come across while searching for ways to make my pages more interesting is Adobe flash animations. They’re all over the place; go to any website and I can pretty much guarantee that at some point you will run into some pretty awesome (or maybe not so much) animated flash images. I always wanted to learn how to create flash animations, but was afraid of doing so because I thought they might be too difficult.

As it turns out, it’s not only easy to do, but it’s even easier to find tutorials that will teach you how to create them. Here are some pretty interesting tutorials that I found while looking for ways to create flash images that would pop on the web page.

Picture Animation — At first glance, the image on the left looks like a bunch of white dots amidst some yellow and what looks to be some water. But when you click on the Picture Animation link you’ll find out a couple of things: one, that the image on the left is, in fact, a lemon and two, that creating an animated image of a lemon is not only cooler than you imagined, but also easier than you thought. I say lemon because that’s the image that the tutorial uses, but you can use any image — a flower, a plane. a phone. You name it, it can be done. It’s a neat way of getting started with these animations.

How to animate a logo — This particular tutorial is particularly vital for people who are trying to create dynamic logos for business web sites. It’s a fairly easy tutorial to go through for those who are familiar with these kinds of applications. It’s all done with Adobe Illustrator, one of the vector-graphic editors out there, probably the easiest one to use.

Old Grainy Flash (Old TV Effect) — This is, by far, my favorite effect in flash. You’ve seen it many times in movies; the old grainy movie, television effect that’s used a lot in flashback scenes or in simulated silent movie scenes, etc. You’ll be surprised how simple it is to recreate in flash. It adds such an interesting dimension to the flash components in your site, giving your site animation an extremely effective, visually impressive take. The folks at the link above give step-by-step instructions on how to create your own old grain flash animation, and they don’t make it very difficult at all.

Now, the stuff above are just a few of the tutorials that I found, but really, there are just so many out there that it’s hard to just pick one. A list of the best Adobe Flash tutorials can be found by following this link. Here, you’ll find dozens and dozens of tutorials, everything from creating movies with animated flash images in ActionScript to building an entire Flash site from scratch! Once you take a look around at all of the things that you can do with Adobe Flash, you’ll see why it’s one of the most versatile tools in web design out today.

As a writer and an avid reader, I not only enjoy books, but I recognize the importance of having access to them on a regular basis. I personally don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have books available to me. Now, with the Internet growing more and more each day, I find that my reading time is being taken up by blogs and web sites.

Recently, however, I started to miss reading my books and my novels. As much as I love print copies of books, the reality is that it is so much more convenient these days to look for e-books that can fill that void. The problem is that a lot of the mainstream e-book sites charge for books, which to be honest, in this economy, is not what I’m looking to spend my money on. But I did a little research and found a list of sites that have what’s called public domain e-books. Those are free to download and enjoy, and there are many titles to choose from, no matter what the genre.

Here are a couple of the ones that I found that I was really excited about!

Gutenberg.org, home of the first online project to bring free digital books to the masses, has been around for a long time, and its library is composed of over 25,000 public domain books for you to enjoy. It includes books in almost every language, ranging from classics like Machiavelli’s The Prince to Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. It might be difficult to find more contemporary titles, but this is definitely a good place to start should you be in the mood for some literary genius. Especially useful for high school students needing to read something for class!

Manybooks.net is a wonderful resource if you’re looking for digital books for your PDA, iPhone or eBook reader. It’s pretty amazing where technology has taken us; once upon a time, cell phones were completely separate from organizers, which were an entirely separate thing from books. My, how times have changed! Now, thanks to sites like Manybooks.net, you can turn your PDA phone into a book with the push of a button or a touch of a screen. This particular site has everything from romance and non-fiction to suspense and pirate (yes, I said pirate) tales.

Now, here’s one that I was fascinated by, not so much because of the books that it carries, but because of the aim of the site itself. The free e-book site Read Easily was created specifically with the needs of the visually impaired in mind. The print of the e-books is large enough so that anyone who has problems reading the small print in regular books can enjoy the same books that we all have access to. This is a great site for the elderly especially, and there are some well-known classics in their library, books like Huckleberry Finn and A Tale of Two Cities and The Count of Monte Cristo. I was quite intrigued by the home page which, in addition to introducing visitors to their free services, gives statistics for visual impairment worldwide and why the web site is so important.

I was very happy to find these sites and many more. Go here for a list of some more sites that might keep you reading.

I love WordPress. It’s user-friendly, simple to understand and so comprehensive when it comes to managing your blog.

I’m not the only one that feels this way. In fact, WordPress is one of the fastest growing blog hosts on the web, and bloggers all over the world can easily understand why. Its interface is easy to use and there are so many things you can do, so many templates you can choose from — the list goes on and on.

Now, there are different applications and tools that you can add to your WordPress blog to enhance your blogging experience and make it even more useful and exciting for you, while helping you bring more readers into your space.

Courtesy of Brave New Code comes Crossroads, a plug-in that adds Flickr photos to your blog. One of the few drawbacks of WordPress is that it doesn’t have great photo capabilities. With things like Photobucket and Flickr out there, the only problem becomes incorporating those into your blog with no problems. Crossroads helps bring your Flickr account to your blog without any hassles. It doesn’t work on Photobucket but, then again, Flickr is the fastest growing photo host on the web right now.

Excerpt Editor is a plug-in that allows you to create and edit all of your WordPress excerpts. It also allows you to create excerpts for pages, which is something that can only be done with a plug-in. Excerpts give your readers a little taste of what they can read on your blog. WP gives you limited space as to what you’d like to include on your excerpt. With this plug-in, you have the control over what you allow your readers to see.

With the introduction of podcasting into the World Wide Web, it’s now possible to add podcasting capabilities to any page, space, or blog out there. The folks at Mighty Seek have put out a link for podPress, a plug-in that allows bloggers to share their recorded podcasts with people out on the web. Podcasts are kind of like the Internet’s version of a radio broadcast. You can subscribe to podcasts that cover everything from fishing to poetry; anything that you’re interested in, you can find a podcast for somewhere. Now with podPress plug-in, you can add podcasts to your WP blog as well.

We’ve all seen it: that Share This button at the end of a blog entry, web page, or Internet article that allows you to share it with the rest of your friends through email, social networking sites, or bookmarking. Now you can add it to your WP blog. The Share This button gives the reader options to share your blog with about 20 different sites, including Facebook, Myspace, Digg, Technorati and Google. By providing this function to your site, you’re automatically adding functionality as well as accessibility to your web space, making it more attractive to those that come see it. It’s great for blogs that are frequently updated and that have information and articles that can help many people, such as how-to and DIY blogs.

These are just a few of the apps that will enhance and improve your WP experience. You can find an entire toolbox of WordPress applications and plug-ins below.

It’s not true anymore that a novice web surfer can’t build their own site or get their own space online. Social networking media has made that possible, of course, but you don’t have to limit yourself to Myspace, Facebook or Xanga anymore. There are hundreds of tools that can help you build a home in Cyberland, and most of them are aimed at helping the amateur web designer create beautiful, dynamic spaces on the Internet.

From web design templates to web application creators, there are dozens of sites available online to get you started in building that web site you’ve been thinking about. Most of them are little to no cost, and they are easy to use.

SiteKreator is an easy-to-use beginner’s tool for creating, building and hosting your own web site. With different plans that range from $0-39.95 a month, you have a variety of options to choose from . The site is comprehensive in that it explains each plan carefully, indicating what’s included with each package, and it offers various levels of tech support, going from email help to a 24/7 customer service hotline. The hosting is reliable and the designs are slick and easy to get around. You get 6 different templates with the free account which, for a novice web designer should be plenty of choices. But you can always have more if you want.

Weebox is an awesome — I repeat, AWESOME — Flash-based web site creator that allows you to just drag and drop what you’d like to have on your page. I love Flash because it makes everything look so cool and interesting, and it adds a professional finish to your site that you just can’t get with HTML editors, in my opinion. Of course, for a beginner, the Flash-based editor might be a little confusing, but it is definitely worth taking a look at if you’re into some of the more interesting aspects of web design. The only drawback is that you have to host your page with them, but that’s a good option anyway (and a much easier one) if you’re new at this web publishing thing. Great site for Flash sites!

Formspring is a cool little site that allows you to create forms online to post onto your website. This is a great one for business sites or sites that would like to get feedback from their visitors. You see forms used in many ways all throughout the Internet, and now you can use them too. It shows you step-by-step how to create the form, and then it shows you how to post it onto your own site. Simple enough!

Many people don’t realize that just because you build a web site one way, that doesn’t mean that it will look the same way in all web browsers. What looks one way in Internet Explorer, for example, may look totally different in Firefox or Netscape. Enter Browsershots, a simple, easy-does-it web site that allows you to enter your web page address and gives you screenshots of how your web design will look in pretty much every browser available out there. It’s simple to use, and easy to access, and there’s no complications to it. Just plug in your URL and check it out. This is one you need to bookmark, if nothing else, to see how cool your site looks in different vehicles.

There are so many other tools that you can check out! Mashable has done a great job of putting together a pretty good web design toolbox for users to partake in. You can check out the links right here!

Once upon a time, YouTube was just a speck in the vastness of cyberspace. Seemingly overnight, however, YouTube has become a phenomenon; a place for people to learn, vent, laugh, cry and think, YouTube has become the world’s playground for video posting. When Google bought YouTube in 2006, it became even more popular and now, counting on millions of users from all over the world, it has become the foremost video uploading site on the Internet today.

The only drawback to YouTube? Its limited useability. Upload, watch, link or embed — those are the only four choices for YouTube videos. Or are they? I have scrambled and scrambled all through the web looking for some cool applications and tools that can maximize my YouTube experience and I’ve found a few excellent ones that I’d love to share with you.

Video Downloader is my favorite YouTube tool because it integrates right into my Mozilla Firefox web browser. Video Downloader allows you to download videos onto your computer so you can do whatever you want with them, whether it’s watching them on your own time without having to go to YouTube and search for them again, or extracting audio for various other uses, whatever your need is, Video Downloader helps you get it all done. The Firefox extension gives you immediate access to it by providing icons to add to your browser and its user-friendly interface makes it a breeze to use.

Have you ever seen a video on YouTube and wished that you could watch it at any time, from any device? You don’t have to wish anymore; this application, TubeSock, makes it possible for you to do so. TubeSock allows you to rip videos from YouTube and format them so that you can play them on your iPod, or your PSP, or your Mac. There are some particularly awesome things about this application that I love. For one, it’s supported on both Mac OS and Windows XP. It can also download videos from other video sites, not just YouTube. My favorite thing about TubeSock though is that if you’re like me and you only have an audio-only portable device, TubeSock will rip the audio for you and convert it to an audio file. Very cool application, indeed. And so easy to use!

Splicd is a neat little website that is pretty self-explanatory. For those of you that are easily annoyed by extremely long YouTube videos that only have a snippet of useful information that you want to share with friends and family, Splicd gives you the opportunity to take that little snippet and create a link for that specific spot on the video, so you can send friends that link instead of having them agonize over an extremely long video clip. When you go to the Splicd website, you paste the link to the video in question, then you plug in the start time and the end time of the clip you want to extract from the video. When you hit the submit button, it gives you a Splicd link to share. It also shows the video that you’re sending so you can make sure it’s the right clip. It’s pretty easy to use, very fast and very convenient, I have found, especially for educational videos.

What kind of cyberworld would it be if we couldn’t have a WordPress plugin to help us improve our blogs? TubePress comes to the rescue with a plugin that creates beautiful and crisp video galleries for your WordPress blog. It is simple to use and integrates nicely with WordPress. I really love it because video can add so much variety to a blog, and TubePress makes it so easy to achieve that. I love anything that can enhance my WordPress experience; WP is one of the most user-friendly blog hosting sites on the Internet, and plugins like this make it so much more fun to use! No longer do I have to go through posting videos on my blog the old way. TubePress makes it easy and fun to add videos to my site.

Using these and many other applications, widgets and plugins will enhance your YouTube experience in spades and help you make the most out of the most popular video site on the planet.

Nothing is harder and more tedious that going out to find a job, especially in this shaky market. It just seems like there are no jobs anywhere, no matter where you look. I’ve gone through that before; looking and looking in vain through the same two or three websites, trying to find that perfect job, only to be constantly disappointed.

But doing some heavy-duty searching, I found out that there are not one or two, but tons and tons of job hunting websites and online tools that job seekers can benefit from. I couldn’t believe it! There are so many places, and they’re not just your typical Careerbuilder site either. They’re specific to everything from location to career goals. You can apply to jobs that cater to the specific field that you’re looking for or you can apply to jobs that are in your area; you can even apply to jobs based on education level or availability of employment.

I’ve listed a couple of the ones that I like the most below. They proved to be some of the most helpful sites that I went to.

Craigslist — Craigslist is the foremost online classifieds listing in the world, with thousands upon thousands of listings from all over the world in hundreds of categories. I have found many leads through Craigslist when it comes to job search. The good thing about Craigslist is that it’s very much like looking at the classifieds in your local paper; it’s straightforward, it’s self-explanatory and the best part is that it requires no registration for you to use it. Simply click on the headline you’d like to view and, if you like what you read, email the person who posted the item. The bad part about Craigslist is of course the amount of spam that makes it in there, but many times it’s pretty easy to tell what’s what. So avoid spamming and take the proper precautions and you’re good to go.

Indeed – Indeed.com is a very simple website, sort of like a Google for job hunters. Simply put in a keyword or a job title that you’re looking for and the city, state, or zip code that you’re looking for and you’ve got yourself tons of listings that you would have otherwise not found anywhere else. When I used Indeed I came across so many job listings that I had not seen before right in my area…it gave me so much more to work with! Indeed also has a Canadian site, an Indian site and a UK site.

Resolio — Not all websites out there concentrate on the actual job hunting aspect of…well, job hunting, but they still provide awesome help in the areas job seekers need most. Resolio is one of those sites. Resolio is an online application that allows you to build and post beautiful, attractive and professional resumes so you can make the best possible first impression with a potential employer. It’s easy to use and pretty self-explanatory. Of course, you have a free option and a paid option, with the paid one offering more templates and benefits, but the site is definitely great for those who need to build a great resume but have no idea how to start.

These are just some of the sites that I came across that have really revved up my job search. For a list of sites that may be helpful to you, click here and search away.

It used to be that finding a nice set of professional looking icons was difficult to do unless you were either a web designer or someone who was willing to fork out some cash for them. No longer; in fact, it’s not uncommon to find beautiful, interesting web icons that you can use personally and professionally at absolutely no cost. Why is that, you ask? Well, icons are pretty cool to make…if you have the time and patience — and the ability — to make them, that is. Most people don’t, but there are graphic artists out there who create icons regularly and put the sets out there for public use as a way of being recognized and having their work out there. Almost like putting out a resume, but with really cute drawings.

Icons are more than just cute drawings, though. They’re extremely important in web design, so much so that many times it is the quality of your icons that can make the difference between dull and interesting. Here, I’ve listed a couple of my favorite free icon sets and some places where you can find many more.

These are just two of the many styles included in the RSS Icons Campaign designed by Design Freak. Their RSS feed icons are ideal for those of you who are looking for a cool-looking, very different take on the boring little feed box that sits on the corners of the websites that we are used to visiting. These little guys can make your design look fresh and modern, with a hint of wit and tons of charm. I am in love with these icons!

This sharp, dynamic YouTube icon is part of an incredibly stylish and sleek group of icons created by Lucas (pho3nix) in Poland. As part of this impressive collection, you will find gorgeous, clean versions of icons for some of your favorite online sites such as Wikipedia and Facebook, making this the perfect set for yourweb page. This set is especially useful if you have pretty good traffic going to some of these sites through your own page. It’s the perfect set for the social media hounds, as well as those who want crisp design and simplicity but don’t want to compromise style. Definitely one of my favorites.

Now, here’s a pretty cool one. Courtesy of the folks at Icon Lab, the “Build Your Own Box” icon set allows you to place whatever items you want inside the boxes, essentially creating your icons in whichever ways you’d like. What I love about this is that it’s gives you, the designer, the creative flexibility to decide what to include in your own icon set. You should be warned, however, that this particular set, however cool it is, is not for the novice user. It requires graphic imaging software so that you can make your icons. When you click on the Icon Lab link above, you’ll be able to download everything you need to enjoy this versatile set, including a how-to video and some friendly instructions.

You can find links and reviews of many other awesome –and free– icon sets here and here. You’ll be guaranteed hours of icon searching fun.

Gmail users have the ability to send up to 20MB of attachments. Sometimes you need more maybe even over 500MB at a time. Businesses especially often have the need to send very large file attachments. Freelance workers, advertisers, small and large companies are a few of those in need. Other people are just people like you and I who want to send the latest and greatest family pictures to our friends and family living further away. Now you have 7 ways to send huge files bigger than Gmail offers.

YouSendIt – Those familiar with sending large files may have heard of this free file sending company. Send up to 100MB files at a time without even registering. You upload the file; they get an email with a link and click to download it. It stays there for seven days. There is a premium service for those who need to send up to 2GB and need more bandwith.

MegaUpload – Send up to 500MB of files. Storage at this site is one of the largest. No need to register and premium service to rid it of ads and speed download time.

zUpload – Easy does it with this file sending site that allows you to send 500MB at a time. Each file has a unique URL and stays online for thirty days. No premium service available it is strictly advertiser supported.

DropSend – Send files up to 1GB with a $5 a month premium account or 250MB at a time for free accounts. Only 5 sends per month with the free service and no account registering necessary. Their desktop client is available in Mac and Windows operating systems.

MailBigFile – This way to send huge files is very similar to YouSendIt. No registering and 100MB file sending limit. There is a Pro account available to send up to 2GB at a time. The limit of downloads per month is 25 so the unlimited bandwith advertised is capped by that.

LeapFILE – This file sending service targets business and enterprise users. The customized branding and security of this company makes its Enterprise Exchange an asset to companies. Private labeled file exchange and a Basic Exchange are available to users for a fee.

Box.net – If you are seeking out ways to send huge files on the internet Box.net is a simple but powerful way to online sending and storage. Whether you are on your home computer, laptop or mobile phone you can take care of your Box.net files. After you upload files onto your storage through the 256-bit secure encryption you can work with them. Send anything from large documents, digital photos, zip files, videos, music to friends, family or business contacts. It is easy to access files on the internet that you use for your mobile telephone with 5GB of storage.

In today’s busy world that is linked online 24/7 make sure you have all the sending power you need to stay in touch with business contacts and those you hold dearest to you heart.
